Reversible: Coop OBS! Jekta
Video / Performance. HD.
Duration: 7:55 mins.
This clip: 03:13 mins.
A video work and performance by Hans Christian van Nijkerk, shot in Tromsø (Norway) in december 2010 and edited in 2011.
The piece follows the performance artist – casually dressed in striking bright red – doing some groceries in a supermarket (Coop OBS! at the Jekta shopping mall in Tromsø, Norway).
But something is out of place.
The other customers appear to be moving backwards, in contrast to the artist, who seems to be very focused on his task and mentally cut off from his surroundings.
The soundtrack displays a heightened sense of awareness, highlighting among other things the low hum of freezers and the beeps of a reverse vending machine.
Originally performed live at 2 different supermarkets, Hans Christian attempted to perform the entire shopping ritual in reverse. Returning products to the shelves – forcing himself to actively think through every single act of the shopping process. Perhaps trying to shake customers out of their automated everyday shopping routine?
Previously exhibited in Silverlens Gillman Barracks, Singapore at the group exhibition «Melancholy Lover of a Vanished Space» (07th. -30th june 2013).
Also exhibited in Harstad june 18th -25th 2011 at the group exhibition "Ut i min hage: no. 19" and at NNKS in Svolvær november 11.-17th 2011 as part of "As Time goes by...".
