The exhibition "When the light began fading, I wandered home" is supported by BEK (www.bek.no). We're working 8 hour shifts at BLOKK to get the exhibition done thoroughly and in time.

More about the exhibition (in Norwegian):

Cornelia Glitsch (Photography) and Hans Christian van Nijkerk (Video/Sound)

"When the light began fading, I wandered home"

Exhibition at BLOKK – August 1st-3rd, 2014.
Opening: August 1st, 20:00 p.m..

The exhibition title is a quote from Alan Lightman's essay "Prisoners of the Wired World", where he reflects on why he doesn't waste time any longer. The exhibition is the first collaboration between Cornelia Glitsch and Hans Christian van Nijkerk. They discovered that some of their works shared the same keynote, aesthetically and thematically. Both artists are concerned with awareness and the ability to discover and dwell on things. They like to have a curious and receptive approach and see the value of practicing patience and sensitivity. This is why they tend to be attracted to situations, things and places where seemingly not much is happening, but where something still grabs their attention.

The soundtrack, composed and recorded by Hans Christian, is inspired by the ambient music genre (cf. Brian Eno, Boards of Canada, etc.). Ambient music emphasizes tone and atmosphere over traditional structure or rhythm and "is intended to induce calm and a space to think" (from the liner notes of Brian Eno's Ambient 1: Music For Airports.)

Cornelia Glitsch (b. 1976) has a bachelor from KHiB and has in recent years made a living from seasonal work as a cemetery gardener and spent her winters on independent studies. Artistically, she is concerned with slowness, among other things. Cornelia has chosen photography as her main form of artistic expression. It's an artform that has been with her for a long time and is what she works with the most on a regular basis. Other forms of expression she has worked with are performance, song, sound and site-specific works.

Hans Christian van Nijkerk (b. 1982) is a Norwegian / Dutch visual artist, performer and musician living in Bergen. He earned his bachelor in contemporary art in Tromsø. Hans Christian's primary artistic expression is performance, live as well as video-based. Furthermore, he works with music, sound, photography, text and installation. In his work Hans Christian explores - often using humor - themes such as the audience, communication technology, greed, desire, memories, transience and death. His latest partly autobiographical main project deals with competition and athletics. He has performed and exhibited at Silverlens Gallery (Singapore), NNKS (Svolvær), Small Projects (Tromsø), the Norwegian national poetry slam championship (Oslo) and Dansens Hus (Oslo).

July 16th, 2014
The title for the upcoming exhibition with Cornelia Glitsch at BLOKK has been decided:
"When the light began fading, I wandered home".
We are working hard these weeks to ensure this exhibition will be as good as it can be.

On behalf of Open Forum, I have been invited by curator and artist Amelia Beavis-Harrison to hold a presentation / performance at Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo on monday October 6th. The programme  invites artists, scholars, curators, writers, practitioners from arts and sciences to share their thoughts and research with the student body and the local art community. It is located in Kunstnernes Hus which is at Wergelandsveien 17, Oslo and is from 19.00 to 20.00. The programme has traditionally been a series of talks/ presentations / interactions each Monday during the academy term time, and each year a new set of curators develop a new programme, this year it is the aforementioned Amelia Beavis-Harrison and  Alan Armstrong.

Amelia writes the following:
Who is relying on what, and what for. When we attend an event we are an audience, a spectator and a number, we are there to absorb what is given to us by those who are controlling the situation. But are we the audience not the ones really controlling the situation. Are we not just as important as those who we perceive to have control. The collective ‘we’ are relied on by the ‘other’, waited for and needed to make ‘their’ situation a reality, without the ‘us’ there is no ‘them’.

Bringing these terms to the present situation Open Forum, how can we in this case the organiser, the invited, the audience make these known constructs more fluid and interchangeable. How can the collective we become a body that shares the experience of the situation and has a more ambiguous authority on the situation.

Open Forum would like to invite a series of guests to break down the structure of Open Forum which is at its core a platform for discussion, but over time has become reliant on well-known presentation formats. We invite each guest to take a one hour period of time and de-construct it, questioning the known and relied upon mechanisms that have been functioning within the Open Forum platform where seating, form, authority, environment, language, visuals, etc have become familiar tools. The content of the guest’s hour is not requested by the organiser but handed over as a question.
